Chambal is committed towards maintaining a very high standard in the areas of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS). Its policies, processes and programmes are planned that go beyond regulatory compliances and help in providing competitive advantage to the company. The plants at Gadepan are designed with inbuilt features for full proof protection of environment and safety. Chambal was amongst the few in early 1990s that adopted DCS/ PLC from the conceptual stage. All operational activities are carried through the state of art DCS/ PLC systems to further strengthen the safety system.
To further strengthen the safeguards for safety and environmental protection, Chambal has initiated the Process Safety Management System that is practiced in the most advanced Fertiliser plants abroad. The safety and environmental norms followed by the plant are far more stringent than those mandated by the government.
Chambal has been accredited with the Environment Management System Standard ISO 14001, Quality Management System Standard ISO 9001 and Occupational Health and Safety Managemant System Standard OHSAS 18001 certifications. It has also received a 5-Star Rating for its Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems by British Safety Council in 2006. In the year 2007 and 2008, Chambal received the "Sword of Honour" from the British Safety Council.
In 2006, an Ergonomics study of the Gadepan Complex and Corporate Office at Delhi was conducted by a team of experts from Central Labour Institute (CLI), Mumbai and a comprehensive study on “Work Environ Monitoring” was carried out by a team from BHEL, Tiruchirappalli.
These systems have been implemented as a part of constant improvement in the area of EHS. Chambal has an integrated EHS Management System for implementation and monitoring and it is reviewed regularly. A corporate EHS Policy as also a site EHS Policy provides the framework and guidelines for environment, health and safety.
The plant also has a record of being highly energy efficient, per tonne of urea produced. Of the 200 MW of power consumed, only 18 MW is electric power. The rest is steam, which is generated within the manufacturing process itself, by recycling waste heat. A plant using less energy is automatically less polluting.
Constant improvements are made by modification in the main process / working conditions by adopting state-of-the-art technology that has resulted in a pollution free environment.
To develop a green cover in the vicinity of the fertiliser complex over 2,65,000 trees were planted within the Gadepan Complex. Of the 1060 acres of the entire area, around 525 acres have been developed as a naturally growing forest, a green belt and beautiful gardens. Home to thousands of birds and other wildlife… a fertile, flourishing natural ecosystem.
